12 Days of Kiss-Much, down day and snowflakes

Yesterday I didn't do anything for our 12 days of Kiss-Much. I was tired. We've been feeling a bit under the weather. So, mostly we wrapped presents. It was a lovely, romantic, day in it's own ordinary way, what a joy!

Today, it snowed, and we've been watching Christmas movies with our four year old. I've been on the computer getting some work done and in the background I hear Will Ferrell acting like an Elf. Josh cleaned the kitchen and has kept Scotty busy, playing with him all afternoon. That is romantic too. Life is good.

I hope you're finding as I am that daily romance is so much more about your state of mind, and less about stressing over the little things. Remember, if it isn't fun, if it doesn't make you smile, if it isn't feeding your soul but rather creating stress, it is not romantic.

Ideas for tomorrow's 12 days of Kiss Much

-Hang Snowflakes above our bed, attach notes of gratitude to strings
-Read Dickens
-Give Josh a special ornament

12 Days of Kiss-Much, last three days update...

Whew, we have been so busy lately, let me see if I can catch my breath. 12 day of Kiss-Much has been happening, sometimes in unexpected not exactly as planned ways....but the spirit of romance has definitely been here, which is the whole point anyway :)

Day Three: I baked Josh's favorite cookies with our four year old!

Day Four: Josh absolutely indulged ME this time, and we had a two hour couples photo shoot at St. Martins college, in the freezing cold, and down pouring rain...I wore a pink vintage dress and a cardigan, we took shelter under an umbrella. It was crazy, cold, and SOOOOO much fun! A great big THANK YOU to the most amazing photographer in the world (Liz Cloudman) for putting up with that weather! I can't wait to see the pictures!!!

Day Five: I scrubbed our bathroom clean! Added a few new wall sconce candle holders, washed the towels and tonight we are taking a bubble bath. Nothing like sharing an apartment size bathtub to make one feel close to their love!

I made this collage depicting my epic love for bubble baths when  I was in 6th grade.  My obsession with all things romantic strongly rooted itself within my soul at a very young age.
Tomorrow's plan? I'm thinking after the kiddo is in bed....there will be dancing to Christmas music! I plan to hang snowflakes from the ceiling. If I have time, my super awesome ambitious plan is to make actual invitations, I'm going to have a hay day coming up with the dress code!

More ideas for 12 days of Kiss-Much

-Drive around and look at Christmas lights
-Go see a play or musical performance (There is a lot going on at the moment, I want to go see The Nutcracker for part of our 12 days)
-Decorate sugar cookies together
-Have a hot chocolate tasting, try different flavors and recipes!

12 Days of "Kiss-Much" Wreath and Rose Petals

As I walked into Michael's craft store I saw the most magnificent wreath hanging in the entrance. My eyes glazed over...."ooooh how muuuuuuuuch....?

$80.00

No.
Maybe?
No.
Please?
No.
Sigh.

I walked away.
I walked back.
I walked away.
I walked back.

I noticed something, a big sign I'd somehow missed before "All wreaths 60% off".

Yes!

I took it to the checkout counter. "It's military Wednesday, if you are military you can have an additional 10% off your purchase, including sale items!" The clerk says to me.

YES! I proudly procure my military ID.

"Hmmmm, this wreath is not ringing up at the right price...Just wait a minute I'll try this again." He apologizes.

I stand there blissfully day dreaming of hanging the wreath on our bedroom door. How beautiful it will look, how romantic. I'll hang notes from it. I'll tuck love birds into the branches. He'll slowly open the door and peek past the greenery, and golden ribbon, and see....

Our beautifully made bed!
With rose petals...
OH, YES! ROSE PETALS!
Glorious, heavenly, rose petals.
Oh my goodness, how perfect.
Sheer perfection!
Tra, la-la, la-la! My heart is singing!

Hmm? What's that?

"You have been so patient with our delay in getting this wreath wrung up,
you can have an additional 10% off!" The clerk smiles.

That eighty dollar wreath, is now 80% off!

Merry Kiss-Much to me!

12 Days of "Kiss-Much"

Today as I was vacuuming in occurred to me that today is 12-12-12, what a once in a lifetime date! I thought it would be really fun if I came up with something clever to commemorate this date when an idea popped into my head..."What if I do something clever and romantic for Mr. Nickerson for the next 12 days! Leading up right up to the night before Christmas Eve! The Twelve Days of 'Kiss-Much!'"

The more I thought about it, the giddier I got, indicating that this is a winning idea! As fate would have it, last night around midnight I felt inspired to write Josh a love note and leave it by his car keys to find this morning on his way out the door to work. So day one was covered, before even getting the idea! Yet another indication that this is a truly inspired idea!

So, day one of my "Merry Kiss-Much" was a love letter.

If you'd like to join me in my 12 days of Kiss Much with your sweetie, please join in the fun and let me know in the comments what romantic idea you came up with for your Love! I need all the ideas I can get, I'm sort of singing this one by ear, which actually makes it pretty fun!

Ideas for day two:

Hang a wreath on our bedroom door
Make Josh white chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies (The ones that one his heart back in highschool)
Dance to Christmas music
Make a paper stocking with a love coupon inside

L is for Love Letter

I know, that just about everyone participating in this ABC blogfest probably thought "Love is the last thing I'd choose as my topic for L, SO cliche" so I'm banking on that, and choosing love for L. Not just love, love letter. And again, you'll have to bear with me as I gush about my husband, because he is deployed right now, and he's on my mind pretty much every second. Especially today, as I rushed our son into the ER and could have really used some help with a four year old who has a severe phobia of doctors and emergency rooms in general. I blame the stitches he had to get two months ago...or perhaps his latest round of shots. At any rate, there's no letting a guy off work to help out his wife and sick kid when you're on a submarine. So, I figure, in exchange for my husband being off too sea, defending our freedom and all, while I'm at home pining and taking care of a really sick kid all by myself....you can read one of the most beautiful things he ever wrote to me, and we can all gush over how romantic he is, deal?

July 28, 2004 (Amazingly, he proposed to me two years later, to this day)

"Thousands of times the wind and sunlight whispered your name to me, and the stars spelled it out, a chorus of birdsong at dawn, and all they can sing about is you. How amazing that you could see yourself with me forever, forever is such a long time. With you at my side there is no place I'd rather be. Let the gates of eternity open, let the centuries pass like seconds, let the sun grow cold and the universe expand and contract in a cosmic heartbeat, my love for you will outlast them all."

-Josh Nickerson

How on earth, could I ever say "no" to a man who writes like that? Ah. I swoon. That is a real love letter.

PS-The kiddo is fine, He's just had a BAD cough and fever for the last week and the hospital was concerned about dehydration and the possibility of pneumonia, but they sent him home since his lungs look fine, and he's been authorized to eat as many popsicles as his little heart desires :)

J is for Joshua

See this and more of my work at my etsy shop, here!

There was a guy I called "Prince Charming" when I was a little girl.  I thought of him as I skipped around the house singing "I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream". I wrote letters to him "to open when I'm married!" I was waiting for him when I envisioned myself in white.

And I dreamed of tuxedos and kisses, not steel toed boots and deployments. I dreamed of date night at the movies and sweet nothings whispered in my ear, not courting over the span of 3,000 miles and hours lingering on a telephone.

But, I never imagined the intense joy of a homecoming, that first kiss after so many thousands missed, I couldn't read the hundreds of letters that would fly back and forth across the country as two people fell in love through their written word. The thrill of being escorted across the red carpeted bridge spanning the water and leading us to the Ring Dance.

That look in his eyes as I sang to him on our wedding day, the room filled with people, but the only person I could see was him. The reverent awe surrounding us as we gazed upon our newborn son for the first time. The tears that wouldn't stop as I lost myself in his embrace, for at last he was home, after being gone for so long.

Nothing is as I imagined. But as I look back,
I see that for all I imagined, it was nothing.
Not even a shadow of the greatness, of this day.

No, he is not prince charming. He is Josh. And he is the one I love, today, and forever.

Being a military wife, how do I do it?

I remember saying it. So many of us did, in our youth before we knew much about anything, we all knew one thing "I will never marry a military man."

"How do they do it? Those women who marry a military man? Those men who marry a military woman? With the deployments, and the stress of military life, moving around ALL the time? That must be so hard, they must be so strong. I could never do that."

But then, I saw him. My senior year of highschool, looking cool and calm in our first period class. Stoic. Reserved. Distant. And so undeniably awesome. I mean, the guy just permeated coolness. Not because he was the MOST popular, or the MOST attractive, or the MOST athletic, or the MOST ambitious or the MOST sought after, but because he was just enough of ALL of these things. He belonged to no group because he got along in any group. And he had a secret he kept remarkably well hidden, he was a freaking genius. The first time I saw him I knew he would be my friend. My best friend. My eternal friend. And then, he joined the Navy, and so began my journey as a military girlfriend when I was just 18.

He joined the CASH program and blew all the recruiters away with his perfect test scores and physical stamina. The guy could out run, out pushup, out pull-up outlast everyone at the recruiting center so they started putting him in charge of leading the other guys in workouts. His SAT scores were stellar so they recommended he get involved in the nuclear program. Before we knew it, this amazing kid was getting accepted into the Naval Academy. He was incredible. Handsome, talented, driven, ambitious, adventurous, and absolutely in love with me, ME! And that little vow I'd made all those years ago to never get involved with a military man was a distant memory. And has been, ever since Josh Nickerson put on his first uniform.

We dated long distance the four years he was at the Academy. We saw each other a matter of months out of this time. And people would look at me like I was crazy and say "Wow, a long distance relationship is so hard, how do you do it?" But how do I answer a question like that? It's like they were asking "How do you love him, when he's soooooo far away?" To which my only answer could be, how do I NOT love him, where-ever he is? How did I do it though? Well, I just did, yeah sometimes it was a challenge but here's the thing EVERYTHING involves challenge, everything worth while anyway. Is challenge such a bad thing? No, I think it's wonderful! Challenge makes us grow, challenge beckons us to become something greater, it inspires us, motivates us, moves us in ways nothing else could. We become who we are meant to be only when we answer the call of a challenge. And then, comes the pride of success. The day Josh graduated from the Naval Academy and we could finally get married was incredible. Not just because of the long distance chasm our love had crossed, but because of HIS incredible accomplishment, that I had the opportunity of supporting him in! I was SO proud of him!

Fast forward five years of marriage and one preschooler later, and when people find out I'm a submariner wife they respond very much the same way they did when they heard I was in a long distance relationship "Oh wow, how hard, I don't know how you do it! Months without your husband? How late does he work? Oh my gosh, how do you do that?" But in my heart it all translates down to that same strange question, it's as if they are asking me again "How do you love him? With the absences, the moving around and tremendous demands of such a job?" And my mind just reels at the question in absolute amazement you might as well ask me "How do you breathe? Every single second, millions of times over a lifetime, over and over again, HOW do you breathe?" To which I would simply respond, how could I NOT breathe and live to answer that question?

How do I not love this man, and be me? How do I do it? How do I do being a military wife? How do I not? How could I be anything else? This is apart of our life, so I just do it, sometimes I cry, sometimes I laugh, sometimes I think I'll go crazy, sometimes I hate it, sometimes (most of the time) I'm grateful for it! It's a wonderful challenge that grows our relationship in ways many people will never experience in their lifetime! It has given Josh tremendous education and experience without debt. It has provided for our family. And it has given us the wonderful blessing of giving something back to this beloved country. To make our own small sacrifices,  for the continued blessing and insurance of freedom. I'm proud of who I am during each patrol as I support my husband! And even more so, I am proud of my husband's work. I am proud of my sailor.

It is easy to look around and wonder how people do what they do. It's wonderful to admire the strength in others, it inspires us. I have a beloved friend who inspires me like this, her son suffers from severe epilepsy, and I pray for her and cry for her, and long for the healing of that beautiful little boy of hers and I find myself asking her "How do you do it?" And she says that she just does. Because how could she not do what she does, she loves her son and that loves raises her to whatever challenge his health brings.

There are women who say goodbye to their husbands for an entire year, sending them off to places of the world much more dangerous than being hidden in the middle of an ocean somewhere, and I wonder, how do they do it? But they do it, they do it because love lifts them up to meet the demands of life, when they are without their husband for so long.

I look around and see women so much stronger than me, doing things that I see as so much harder and so much more demanding, and I wonder how they do it, but they do. And I think I know how they do it. They do it the same way I do, one moment at a time, one hour at a time, one day at a time, because they love the person they are making a sacrifice for, more than the sacrifice itself.

Love carries us through the challenges of life and brings us to a better, stronger, more understanding version of ourselves. And love, is the work of God.

God bless each of us in our own challenges. Whatever path you are on, whatever insurmountable task lays before your feet, may you let the love of God, of those you walk for, and walk with, carry you through the darkest challenge you face and lead you to all you'll become because you got through it. One moment at a time, one step after another, because there is no other way.

How do I do it? I love him.
That, is how I do it.

Golden Moment #30 Courage.

I remember the awkward attempt I made at requesting he recite to me the poem he'd written for me, a few weeks before. My heart was a jumble of emotions, and I was sure he'd find an excuse to back out of my rather desperate attempt to be romantic.

But without reservation the gentle sound of his voice filled my ears and calmed my racing heart, as he spoke the golden pros from memory, from heart.  I melted into blissful peace and knew there was nothing I wanted more in this whole world than this moment with him. We sat cuddled up in each other's arms, on that park bench overlooking the lake. His lips at my ear, the low beautiful sound of the words echoing throughout my entire body.

We were two young kids, eagerly  falling in love for the first time. But he was brave, his heart courage filled, to share with me the depths of his soul. That poem sparked in me the beginning of what I can only describe as a courageous love between the two of us.

Courage to share our true selves. Courage to love for the first time. Courage to love him through distance and separation. Courage to love him when he was distressed and far from home. Courage to love him when he doubted. Courage to say yes. Courage to leave my family and make him my home. Courage to bring his son into this world. Courage to love him through his fears. Courage to love him through my fears. Courage to love him forever. Courage to give him my all.

Courage
By: Heidi Nickerson

Love is not for dainty souls
Like flowers in a park
Tossed about when storm winds blow
And shrinking in the dark

Vainly calling to the world
"Oh love me for I'm pretty
Love me for I'm delicate
Love me for I'm witty!"

But pluck that flower up to love
And watch her shrivel fast
For love that's rooted in oneself,
Is never long to last.

Love is for the brave of heart
Who like a mountain strong
Will never bow before the wind
When storms come raging on

Boldly calling to the world
"Brave soul needed here!
A path with hills and valleys
But I am always here."

Step foot upon that mountain
With courage at your feet
And the journey binds your love,
As you strive to reach the peak.

Yes, love is for the brave of heart
Who heed the noble call
To love another more than self,
And with courage give their all.

Golden Moment # 16, laughing. Crying. Gold.

June 14th's golden moment.
I woke up on the wrong side of the bed yesterday.

I made the mistake of watching HGTV too much and started to see everything that I don't have and really NEED (want).  Like the fact that I need a yard for my toddler to run around in. (Yes, I actually do NEED this one) And I wanted to be one of the people on "House Hunters" or "My First Place" or "Property Virgins". I wanted to give Sandra Rinomato my list of requirements and have an endless budget to work with. 3,000,000 would pretty much get a person just about anything they want, it's not like I want to live in New York City. My list would look like this:

-Big fenced in backyard (Non negotiable)
-Updated kitchen with energy efficient appliances and granite counter tops.
-Big master suite
-Amazing master bath with fabulous tub big enough for me and my Mr.
-4 bedrooms, 2 baths plus a guest 1/2 bath
-A small guest house on the property
-Open floorplan
-Hardwood floors
-Lots of light
-Good location, nice school district

As I was mulling over how much I'd love to live in my dream house, feeling very acutely that I did not live in my dream house but in fact a little itty bitty apartment, my toddler was pretty much acting like a cooped up puppy who NEEDED to go outside. I won't even go into the messes he made while I was going to the bathroom, talking on the phone, rinsing some dishes, or stealing away in my room to just catch my breath. (Okay, okay, and watching HGTV.) Let's just say when Josh came home at the end of the day, I was determined to hide the fact that I'd been bawling on the couch about 15 minutes before he walked through the door, crying over stuff I didn't have, and a toddler who just wouldn't stop climbing on me, kicking me, pinching me, biting me, (In his defense, he was trying to get me to play, when I didn't want to) and he chose making messes galore to keep himself occupied since that's the next best thing to playing tag with mom.

*Not that I want to make any excuses for myself, but it's June and it's cold, gray and rainy outside, not the sort of weather mom wants to go play in. Also, Scotty didn't go to bed till 1:30 in the morning the night before, and kept kicking his bedroom walls and door which = very unhappy neighbors at midnight.

But as Josh walked through the front door, he surprised me with the happiest, most adorable mood. I think he was slap happy tired-(He'd had duty the night before and doesn't get much sleep when that happens). "I'm so happy to be HOME!!!" He said, scooping me up and spinning me around in the living room. Yes, in our teeny tiny space between the couch and the kitchen table he spun me, and my feet didn't hit ANYTHING! "Tell me about your day!" He smiled, no wait, let me GUESS!

"Scotty made a zillion messes", he began, "but you cleaned them up because the house looks amazing! Giants attacked, but you shooed them all away because they are gone now, you burned dinner but the dog we don't have ate it, you were planning a surprise for me that got stolen by little elves, Scotty has been bugging you all day and you are tired but you are so happy because I AM HOME!" At this point, I'm just laughing happily-How he does this to me, I don't know, he just does.

I felt like saying "Yes, all of the above! How did you know!" But I just kind of giggled. "I knew the minute I walked in you'd had a hard day"-he told me, "just give me a few minutes to regroup from work and we can talk about it, okay?"

"Ummm, okay."

Wow. My marriage is gold.

Golden moment #9 My anniversary love letter

My beloved husband,
June 7, 2007, I woke up.

I saw white.
I smelled roses.
I felt butterflies.
The sun shone for us.
The flowers bloomed for us.
The birds sang for us.
My heart beat for you.
It was heaven on earth.

Four years later and the purity is still there, laced lovingly amidst our everlasting commitment and promise to each other. Beauty is everywhere we find ourselves together. In your smile, in your tumbling with our toddler, in a kiss, in a bouquet, in a little apartment we call our home. My heart still flutters each time I hear the door handle turn at the end of the day, and birds take flight where butterflies once fluttered when I get a phone call telling me you are 24 hours away from coming home after months of separation during a deployment. My life is filled with the light of your love. I long for nothing more than to become the best version of myself, so that you might be loved by that glorious woman within me. My heart is yours, I live to love you. There is no greater joy in my life than this. Each morning I wake and am grateful for a new day to love you. You, are my dream come true. This love, is heaven on earth. Thank you for loving me.

Eternally,
Your bride.

Golden moment #2 Surprise lunch date

An unexpected run in with the man of my dreams!

I spent this morning running some errands on base. As I left the Nex (A great big Target like store) I ran into one of Josh's co-workers who told me my husband was eating lunch right next door at the Subway! So Scotty and I went in a gave daddy a big surprise hug while he was ordering his sandwich. He was so happy to see us! We all shared a nice lunch together with Josh and a few of his friends from work. Scotty gave daddy lots of little smiley face stickers he'd bought at the Nex during our shopping trip. Daddy wore them all very happily on his hand.

How lucky, to see my husband in the middle of the day! And what a special moment for Scotty, he was so happy to see "Da-das" unexpectedly! It was a day of perfect timing! A providential golden moment!

Did you have a golden moment today? Or are you still waiting to have yours? Keep your eye out and you'll find it! Leave me a comment once you've found it, I'd love to know what it was!

A List.

When I was young, I had a list. A wish list, of what my future husband would be like. It went a little something like this:

In case that scan was hard for you to read, or if you are crying tears of embarrassment for me, I'll sum up what it said.

Tall. Dark. And Handsome.

Oh, and he called me "Goddess Aphrodite of love" but I didn't know how to spell Aphrodite, so it came out "Affridites".

The purpose of exposing this amusing piece of my past, is to illustrate a point. We ALL had a list. Sure, you may not have written it down, but you had one. You had a type of person you wanted to be with. Somewhere along the lines you figured out the difference between preferences and principles. Mom sat down with you on your bed while you blushed and shared with her your deepest, "sercretest" hopes for the future love of your life, and she smiled and said "It is wonderful you have an idea of the type of person you want to marry someday, but I hope you will remember that tall dark and handsome is meaningless if he is an unkind, or unloving man."

We all came to that place, where we learned, that buying us pearls, playing golf  or strolling us down the streets of Paris would not make us happy if those pearls came from a man who did not really understand kindness and compassion, if golf was more important than time with his family, and a walk anywhere in the world left you groping for something to talk about.

So the list evolved. It changed into something like this:

"I love his great kindness. I love the compassion he shows for others. I love how generous he is, I love that he is always there for his family first. He is good and kind to his mom and sister, and respects his dad. He looks only at the good in people rather than criticizing. He is patient with me, and treats me with such tender love. He is always eager to do things for me. He is kind to everyone he meets. He is sweet to children and loves to play. His heart goes out to those less fortunate and he is eager to aid in any way he can. He is always striving to become a better man."

This was an exert taken from one of my journals, I wrote this about a wonderful man who was courting me at the time. And then I married him. It was all true, and remains so to this day. No where in that journal entry do I talk about how handsome, funny, or classy he is. In my eyes, he is all of those things too, but they weren't important to me when I was thinking about marrying him. They were bonuses, but not worth really weighing into my decision to marry. I made a good decision based on this new list. It was not the tall dark and handsome list of my childhood, it was something much greater. It was a description, of a real man. A good man. A man I loved with all my heart and soul, a man I knew without a doubt I would love for all of eternity.

But love is a miraculous thing. It never stops moving. It never stops changing. It never stops growing. And I find myself once again looking at love with the same curious, dreamy, fascination I held as a young girl creating a fairy tale romance out of chocolate and pearls. Only this time, I find myself asking a question of my love, over and over every day....

"How can I help you become that better man I watched you strive to be as we courted?"

How can my love, my presence in his life inspire him, motivate him and encourage him into the best version of himself? As I ask this question something amazing happens, simultaneously I begin change myself. And in a most magical way, as he grows into the best version of himself, I become a better woman. Day by day I begin to see, that I would have no chance of becoming who God intends me to be without the influence of this very man in my life. It had to be him. It had to be him, because I chose him. I chose him for his goodness, his kindness, and his desire to transcend into something greater. And for this same purpose he chose me. And we continue to choose each other every day. And will do so, for all eternity.

There is a dream on earth
that love falls into place
without a warning
or a care
left to the hands of fate.

How lovely it must be
that wild glow to share,
its mystery enfolding us
concealing every care.

Those eyes.
Those lips.
The longing.
The dark
impassioned bliss,
who could doubt
the lasting,
of such a love as this?

Oh,
Beware of love that falls
from sky,
like pouring rain.
It comes in mighty torrents
but fast dries up again.

The clouds all blow away
and leave the ground as dust.
All your heart once knew
was the primal cry of lust

For love distills most softly
like a still small voice
and whispers truth within us:
"Love, love is a choice".

Of the millions on this earth
over lands, and oceans blue
it could not be another
for I,
My Love
chose you!

Love is an act of will. Love is a choice. Love is to wake up every morning and say in your heart "I will love my husband  today. I will help him to become the best version of himself." Love is to say "I will love you even when you are feeling unlovable." Love is to say "I will love you through all the ups and downs of this life". Love is to say "I will always, choose you."

Paper Hearts.

Ugh. Stupid. Deployment. I miss him. I miss hearing the doorknob turn and that flutter I feel in my chest as he steps through the door, at the end of the day. I miss racing into his arms for my hug. I miss the way he laughs and says "Hey little buddy" to Scotty as he sits down to take off his boots and Scotty plays with the laces. I miss his smile. I miss the sound of his voice saying my name. I miss being asked how my day was. I miss snumbling with him as we fall asleep. I miss him holding my hand in the car while we drive to the grocery store. I miss him telling me how good dinner was, even if it's left over chicken soup for the third night in a row. I miss him telling me I'm beautiful. I miss his kisses. I miss him rubbing my feet. But most of all, I miss those three wonderful words only he can say to make my heart soar.

I want him to come home. I'm sad. I'm lonely. I miss my husband. I can't sleep. It's so impossible to go to bed without him. I miss him. I miss him. I miss him. I wish he could at least call. So I could hear those words I need to hear so much, in his voice. The only voice that matters. I miss the sound of his voice...I miss the magic of those words.

Tonight I cut out a heart, and I wrote the words I so long to hear him say, on that heart. Then I taped it on something that reminded me of his love.

My beautiful apricot colored coach purse. A gift for our third wedding anniversary, I'd been admiring it for weeks. He'd noticed....

Then I saw this. This reminded me of his love too, my beautiful white gold necklace with journey diamonds. A birthday present while we were still dating. I turned 23 that year, in just one more year we'd be married. He wrote me a poem with this gift, a beautiful poem I still read often. I cut out another heart, and taped it next to the necklace.

But hanging up next to the first necklace was another reminder of his love, so I cut out another heart and placed it next to the plumeria flower necklace he'd bought for me on impulse at the mall, because a passerby said it looked stunning as I tried it on, because we'd honeymooned in Maui and he wished he could take me back, because plumeria's are my favorite flower on earth, because he loved me.

On my dresser next to where the necklaces hung sat my perfume, including the Chanel No. 5 which he'd just given me as a Christmas gift. "Every woman should own a bottle of Chanel No. 5" I'd explained to him. "It's the epitome of feminism and allure." Whether he agreed or not, he bought me the perfume. I cut out another heart.

Then I looked at our nightstands. We'd driven an hour in search of an antique shop I'd seen an ad for in a magazine, I thought it would be fun to explore. There we found a nightstand. He generously bought it for me without a moment's hesitation. Simply because I thought it was perfect. The books on my nightstand, the
e-bay lamps to read my books by. This called for more hearts...

The closet full of clothes because refit was tough and he thought a few extra dollars might help distract me through his 180 work week, the couch he bought me in South Carolina. The bed we sleep in every night.  The food in our refrigerator, the goodies in our pantry all there because he worked so hard to provide for our family. I raced to the office to cut more hearts.

The art projects I've been doing, the paper I was cutting hearts out of! The scissors to cut the paper! The pictures, the dishes in our cupboards, the computer I'm writing at, the car I drive, the ring on my finger. All here because he was willing to leave our family and go do his job.  More hearts.

The washing machine, the dryer, Scott's clothes, and bed and toys. The little Bombay I fell in love with at Ross, the chair I needed to nurse in, the classes I wanted to take, the curtains I wanted to put up. The fuzzy hat to keep my head warm. The dance classes that would be good for Scotty and I to get out of the house, the voice lessons so I would never let go of my dream, more hearts.

The apartment keeping our little family safe and warm. The fluffy down pillows that would be so comfy to sleep with, the little table that would be perfect for our room (if only it was cream...) The 10 cans of spray paint it took to cover that black table, the gold finish to make it just right. The cutest UGG boots I've ever seen, a sweater dress, another sweater dress, maybe one more because they are just so pretty....The beautiful Horchow headboard that took a year of saving before we could finally buy it. "Worth every penny" he'd said approvingly as we installed it to our bed.

With each paper heart a weight from the heart within me lifted. Those words I so longed to hear my beloved whisper in my ear resounded throughout my home. Echoed through every single thing I touched. Each and every object in our home was there because of his love. My entire life is filled with his love. My whole world is built upon his willingness to provide for the family he loves so much. His love is everywhere! His love surrounds me and sustains me in every moment! It is impossible to place a paper heart on everything that represents his love.

Though I did give it an honest effort....

It simply can not be done, because his love reaches out to places that can not be physically touched. Somewhere in the eternal lies the depth of it, for it flies through oceans, and races across land, it penetrates a heart heavy with sadness and longing, and there it sits. Quietly. Patiently. Faithfully. Melting away the icy loneliness, soothing the tears that nag the back of my throat all day, bending space itself to bring us home, to each other. Singing those three wonderful words in my ear, his voice filling my heart with the truth of them. I love you. I love you. I love you.

I hear the words on bended knee trumpeting the start of our new life together, tiptoeing across the darkness of a pillow lulling me to sleep, dancing in my head with fire and passion, admiring the miracle of our babe in arms, and once more they call out to me from a thousand miles away, written on a million paper hearts.

I love you, I love you, I love you...

Singing the greatest duet...

Josh and I are polar opposites when it comes to the gender spectrum. I am a Disney princess trapped in the real world and he is a Herculoid marching about as a submarine officer and I wouldn't have it any other way. We balance each other perfectly. We are a constant fascination and entertainment to each other. While I'm chatting with the ladies indoors in front of the fire about babies, housekeeping and tasty green drinks my husband is outside with the guys seeing who can stand the cold the longest.

One day we were driving in the car and happened to pass by a brilliantly colored field of crocus  "Oh, what a beautiful deep aubergine" I gushed.

"What the heck is 'aubergine' "he laughed?

"It's actually French for eggplant, it's how artists describe deep purple" I explained.

"Huh" Josh mused. "Aubergine..." I could hear the smirk in his voice.

"What?" I pressed.

"Well, I just don't see why you can't call it purple."

"Purple could mean a lot of different things, if it's muted it's aubergine, if it's a tone I'd call it lavender, and there's a bunch of other hues in there I could probably find various names for."

"It just seems really confusing when you could just call it purple, and why does it all have to sound so girly, aubergine, lavender, chartreuse, periwinkle, who comes up with these names?!"

"Good point!" I laugh "What name would you give a color?"

Josh didn't skip a beat, it was as if he'd thought of this before...

"Herculean bloodsmoke" he said emphatically "The smoky color that drifts up from a boiling cauldron filled with the blood of a great beast slain by the hand of Hercules himself."

"And what color is that exactly?" I giggled

"Black. Gray. Red. In some cases blue. The only colors that really matter."

From that day on, whenever a situation calls for the description of color, Herculean Bloodsmoke is the first adjective Josh reaches for, and it always makes me smile.

There is such beauty in differences. There is intrigue and mystery. There is always something to figure out, or be puzzled by. I love the primal variance between men and women. It creates such blissful balance. Like harmony and melody, it offers a depth and passion all its own simply by being a contrast. But more than that, I feel if offers a wisdom profound and enlightening if you take the time to learn from it. It's impossible to understand just about anything until you have experienced a contrast with it.

If all you've ever seen is light, how could you understand the word dark?
If all you ever felt was warm, how could you understand the experience of being cold?
If you've never been hungry how do you know what it is to be full?
If you've never been anxious or stressed, you wouldn't even realize you are at peace.
If you've never known a tear how could you ever know you are happy?

Contrast is the greatest teacher there is, and the greatest lesson we can learn is how to live with our opposite. We all have a perfect contrast, and we will all find that. For me, a Disney Princess, I had to have a Herculean math major with a passion for doing flips off of walls. I needed the experience of being married to such a  man. I needed to learn to love something I didn't understand-and so did he. I never expect us to look at things exactly the same way or have the same feelings about an experience because we look and feel the world around us so uniquely. It amazes me that when I look into the eyes of this man so different from myself I am filled with such love and devotion. I can feel his love being returned to me, in his own way, his own perfect way. A way I will never understand but forever be grateful for.  He has caught me in a gaze from which I would never look away.

I love him for the way he sees the world,
I love him for the way he sees me.

I am learning everyday from our differences and becoming a greater woman because of those contrasts. Let us embrace our husbands as they are, you chose your perfect match, and he chose his. You compliment each other, how boring life would be if we were all singing the melody line. So embrace the harmony in your marriage, harmony in the disagreements, harmony in the passion, harmony in the parenting, harmony in the budgeting-you won't be singing the same line but you'll find a way to keep things in tune. May you always be in wonder at your differences, may you keep creating music even when it's a rocky sight singing job, may you revel in the joy of grand compositions and sold out concerts. You may be the diva, but your husband has a voice too. Open your heart and listen to his voice, and let yourself be moved by what you hear in all its difference, all it's might and all its power.
